Luminaire Design
Project Description

This luminaire was designed to be hung above a contemporary art gallery reception desk. The luminaire is meant to serve as task lighting over the reception desk so that it doesn’t affect light within the gallery space itself. Contemporary art to me, means very loose abstract lines and organic shapes. I knew I wanted to use wire mesh and I also knew I wanted to use the 3D printer in the luminaire design but, I wasn’t sure how to apply it. Thinking about contemporary art, that is where I got the idea on how to shape the wire mesh and how to design the 3D printed shapes.

I wanted to use the 3D printed shapes to cover the lamp itself so that the light would shine through the shapes and be directed downwards toward the desk. The plate above the lamp is meant to direct the light downwards as well. The plate also acts as a balancer for the wire mesh. Initially, I was only going to use one large piece of the wire mesh but, I decided to use other smaller pieces above it to help diffuse the light and give it more volume to balance it with the heaviness of the 3D printed pieces.

I chose to make the luminaire completely white because interiors of art galleries are generally all white so that the art stands apart from it. I wanted to do the same with this luminaire. I wanted it look interesting but, I wanted it to feel like part of the art gallery itself rather than one of the art pieces shown there.
